15 Most Popular Breweries in the U.S.

How exactly do you decide what the most popular breweries are in the nation? Well, you always try testing them all – but that may take a while! In the meantime, let’s break it down in two very important ways that show the very different sides of the beer industry in the United States.

Most Popular Breweries by Sales

One of the simplest ways to judge which breweries in America are the most popular is by sales. If a brewery is selling a lot of beer, that means a lot of people like it, right? So let’s take a look at the top 5 brewing companies by sales numbers from the Brewer’s Association.

  1. Anheuser-Busch Inc.
  2. MolsonCoors
  3. Constellation
  4. Heineken USA
  5. PabstBrewing Co.

Not many surprises there, right? But maybe that’s not quite what you had in mind when envisioning super-popular breweries. After all, these corporations are so larger and own so many different separate breweries, it’s hard to put them on the scale with anything else. So let’s take a look at a similar breakdown, but this time based on sales from only craft breweries in the country:

  1. D.G. Yuengling and Son Inc.
  2. Boston Beer Co.
  3. Sierra Nevada Brewing Co.
  4. New Belgium Brewing Co.
  5. Duvel Moortgat

Most Popular Breweries by RateBeer Ratings

Sales numbers are fine, but they’re also quite limited. After all, sales are most influenced by how wide an area a brewery can sell in, its production capacity, and how big the brand is. Fortunately, there are other options – such as using the rating numbers from RateBeer. Obviously, online beer ratings aren’t the perfect list either and are also subject to a number of influences – but it’s still a handy look at what beer drinkers around the country think. Let’s take a look at their top 5, too.

Interesting note: For this particular list, RateBeer has updated to a sort of sliding scale of ratings, which means they combine previous years' ratings with the latest years' ratings to try and even out opinions over time. With that in mind, here are the breweries with the highest ratings:

  1. Hill Farmstead Brewery (Greensboro, Vermont)
  2. Side Project Brewing (Maplewood, Missouri)
  3. Trillium Brewing Company (Boston, Massachusetts)
  4. Tree House Brewing Company (Charlton, Massachusetts)
  5. Cigar City Brewing of the CANarchy Craft Brewery Collective (Tampa Bay, Florida)

Still not satisfied? You may prefer to take a look at the results of the 2020 Great American Beer Festival, which awards the top breweries for numerous beer categories – in essence, an extensive list of craft breweries in the country according to their specialties. Or take a look at the best beers list that the American Homebrewers Association picked for another angle (Bell’s Two Hearted Ale placed first).

All right, all right, we’ve probably already spawned enough debates with this one: While everyone talks it out, try out your favorite brew – and keep it cold with one of our extra-slim, aluminum-and-copper koozies from Seltzer Hut!
